The unit will focus on the concept of Genetics and Heredity. The book that they are using is called "Organisms from Macro to Micro" and will go through a series of lessons that will conclude with the topics of Genetics and Heredity. We will discuss genes and how they interact to be expressed as dominant or recessive traits. This will be studies using sprouts in lesson 1. Lesson 2 will relate this to our own inherited traits and introduce the formal lab report that the students will complete based on their family traits. Lesson 3 will introduce Pedigrees and go into reading as well as creating their own pedigree charts. Their pedigree charts will be for their formal lab report and they will make conclusions based on their finds in Lesson 3. The process of Meiosis will be covered in detail after the review of mitosis, which was covered in the previous lesson. Lesson 4 will simulate the process of Meiosis and the students will actually perform the process as a class. The final lesson in this unit is the first of a three day lesson where the students will complete a group project on a genetic disease. This research project will be completed in class and will conclude with group presentations of their work.

The unit that will cover a great deal of material starting with traits and leading through to meiosis, heredity, and genetic diseases. Some key skills that the students will acquire through this unit are:

  • Students will calculate ratios using Mendelian genetics
  • Students will investigate their own genome
  • Students be able to read and draw Pedigrees
  • Students will write a formal lab report based on their pedigrees
  • Students will present a project on Genetic Diseases

This unit will take more then two weeks to complete. The 5 lessons that are written up for this unit are the main lessons that will be focused on for the first 5 classes. Each class is 90 minutes long and meets every other day.
